As a future art and history
teacher, my goal is to present students with an ideology in which shared knowledge
becomes applicable to life. My concept of learning is that new ideas mentally
stick and become much easier to understand when they are contextually or
emotionally relatable in some regard. Every lesson plan will have an emphasis
on understanding material through an exploration of the underlying meanings. I
want students to digest knowledge through relating patterns from personal
events and experiences in life in order to relate or connect them to others. After
all, both art and history are about introspecting and people best learn when
they can personally relate.
I will approach these goals by connecting academic knowledge and practices to current ideas and concepts that students are inclined to better understand and be passionate about. I will cultivate students learning process through lectures, visual examples/demos, and project testing. My lectures will consist of the presentation of information in conjunction with my personal experiences with the subject matter followed by a discussion in which the students share their knowledge and experience, if any, on the subject. These lectures will be followed by a demo or visual examples to provide inspiration and further understanding to students. With my history courses visual examples will be integrated with the lecture. In order to effectively gage my students understanding the most, I will either have them finish a project or write a paper further exploring or discussing their knowledge on the topic matter.
In summary, I believe my teaching philosophy to be an extension of my personal ideology. For me, life has always been about taking a step back to view the big picture; I wish to pass this type of thinking on to my future students. My long term goal is to never stop learning from my own personal experiences or from my students. In order to maintain a passion for both subjects I will need to continue cultivating these passions. One of my favorite sayings which I have found to applicable to any profession is, “When you’re green you grow, and when you’re ripe you rot.”
